About the Art

The March 1953 cover of Beware! Terror Tales encapsulates the era’s lurid horror aesthetic, with a vivid scene of a skeletal figure menacing a green-faced victim. The sharp contrast of purple and yellow hues heightens the terror, while the protagonist’s wide-eyed expression channels Cold War-era fears of the unknown.

The tagline, “Tales Conjured by the Devil and Written in Blood,” reflects the sensationalism that defined pre-Code horror comics, appealing to audiences drawn to supernatural dread.

Sheldon Moldoff

Sheldon Moldoff (1920–2012) was a Golden Age titan, ghost-drawing Batman for Bob Kane while co-creating Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, and Bat-Mite. His dynamic, Alex Raymond-inspired style defined DC’s 1940s–60s era, shaping heroes like Hawkman and Green Lantern, plus horror anthologies. A prolific storyteller, his bold visuals became DC’s backbone.
