About the Art

This striking June 1951 issue of Captain Science showcases the artistry of Wally Wood and Joe Orlando, pioneers in Golden Age comic illustration. The cover, a vivid tableau of interstellar confrontation, features Captain Science wielding a futuristic weapon against alien adversaries, while a captive woman evokes the "Good Girl Art" style synonymous with the era.

The bold composition reflects post-war fascination with space exploration and pulp sci-fi narratives. Published by Youthful Magazines, the issue delves into themes of vampirism—posing “Truth or Fiction?”—a nod to mid-century cultural intrigue surrounding supernatural phenomena and scientific skepticism.

Wally Wood

Wallace Wood (1927–1981) was a legendary comic artist famed for meticulous sci-fi detail and satirical flair. A self-taught visionary mentored by Will Eisner, he defined EC Comics’ Weird Science and MAD Magazine with stark futurism. His Marvel Daredevil redesign and T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents fused technical mastery with bold, kinetic storytelling.
