About the Art

This October 1940 issue of Hit Comics showcases a dynamic cover by Lou Fine, spotlighting Neon the Unknown in a dramatic mid-air battle against parachuting invaders. The bold composition employs vibrant primary colors and kinetic motion lines to render a surreal, action-packed scene.

Neon, a Foreign Legionnaire transformed by mystical forces, embodies wartime heroism with his glowing powers and defiance of Axis-aligned foes. The cover's depiction of futuristic tanks and aerial combat reflects the era's fascination with technological warfare, while its Art Deco-influenced design elements evoke the optimism of pre-war America.

Lou Fine

Louis Kenneth Fine (1914–1971), a luminary of Golden Age comics, overcame childhood polio to study at New York’s Grand Central Art School and Pratt Institute. Renowned for dynamic figures and meticulous linework, his influential style shaped iconic titles like Black Condor, The Ray, Doll Man, and Uncle Sam for Quality Comics. A master draftsman, Fine’s bold compositions and kinetic energy left an indelible mark on peers like Jack Kirby and Will Eisner.
